Methotrexate
Methotrexate is a drug used to treat certain neoplastic diseases (tumors, growths, or cancer). The active ingredient is methotrexate which is formulated as oral tablets in strengths of 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg and 15mg.
Drug Uses
Methotrexate is available by prescription only. Methotrexate works by reducing the production of cancer cells, bone marrow cells and skin cells, thereby decreasing the spread and growth of tumors. Methotrexate is used to treat cancer of the skin, breast, head, neck, and lungs. This drug is also used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and severe psoriasis.
Methotrexate is usually prescribed when other medications have been unsuccessful.
Doctors may use Methotrexate to treat other medical conditions.
Dosage
Methotrexate should be taken as prescribed by a doctor. Never adjust the dosage without your doctor’s permission. This drug, if administered incorrectly, can be fatal.
Missed Dose
If a dose is missed, contact your doctor immediately.
Precautions
Do not take Methotrexate if you are allergic to any ingredient in this drug.
While using Methotrexate you will need to have your blood tested regularly. Your kidney and liver functions will also need regular testing.
Inform your doctor if you are receiving radiation treatment, or if you have any type of infection, or if you suffer with any of the following conditions: liver or kidney disease, lung disease, pneumonia, or stomach ulcers.
Before using Methotrexate ensure that your doctor has a full knowledge of your medical history as well as any other medications you are using. These include vitamin supplements, herbal medicines and over-the-counter remedies. Methotrexate can react badly with certain medications.
Methotrexate can cause birth defects. You and your partner will both need to use an effective form of contraception during treatment with Methotrexate. In the event of accidental pregnancy, contact your doctor immediately. When treatment with Methotrexate has completed, male and female patients, and their partners, will be required to use birth control for a certain period. Speak to your doctor for details.
Avoid the use of alcohol while using Methotrexate.
If you are using Methotrexate to treat psoriasis avoid exposure to the sun, and do not use sun lamps or tanning beds.
Side-effects
Call for emergency medical assistance if any of the following allergic symptoms occur: difficulty in breathing, hives, or swelling of the lips, face, tongue or throat.
Stop using Methotrexate and contact a doctor immediately if any of the following serious side-effects occur: shortness of breath, diarrhea, vomiting, dry cough, sores or white patches in the mouth or on the lips, bloody urine or stools, decreased urination, body aches, chills, flu symptoms, sore throat, headache (with severe peeling, blistering or rash), low fever, lack of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, or jaundice.
Less serious side-effects include vomiting or nausea, upset stomach, fatigue, dizziness, vision problems, or bleeding of the gums.

Overdose
Overdose with Methotrexate can be fatal. If overdose is suspected, get emergency assistance immediately. Symptoms of overdose include easy bleeding or bruising, pale skin, weakness, nausea or vomiting, mouth sores, dark or bloody stools, or decreased urination.
Storage
Methotrexate should be kept in a cool, dry place away from sun and moisture. Keep this medication out of children’s reach.
